Ernesto Sábato, Writer, Scientist, and Humanitarian

June 24, 1911 is the birthday of writer Ernesto Sábato, one of the great inspirations of 20^th century Latino literature.  Sábato was born the youngest of eleven children in a small town about 160 miles from Buenos Aires, the capitol of Argentina.  His academic career began in science, and he earned a doctorate in physics.  He received a scholarship to study atomic radiation at the Curie Laboratory in Paris, where he discovered the surrealist movement and began his love affair with literature.  His existentialist literature won many awards, but also the displeasure of the Argentine military dictators.  After democracy was restored in 1983, Argentine President Raúl Alfonsín established the National Commission on Disappeared Persons.  He requested that the highly respected Sábato lead this inquiry into the Argentine military’s torture and murder of its citizens during the domestic “Dirty War”. Towards the end of his days, Sábato became a painter, still searching for the meaning of life.

Sábato nació el menor de once hermanos en una pequeña ciudad a unos 160 kilómetros de Buenos Aires, capital de Argentina. Su carrera académica comenzó en la ciencia, y obtuvo un doctorado en física. Recibió una beca para estudiar las radiaciones atómicas en el Laboratorio Curie en París, donde descubrió el movimiento surrealista y comenzó su historia de amor con la literatura. Su literatura existencialista ganado muchos premios, pero también el descontento de los dictadores militares argentinos. Después se restableció la democracia en 1983, el presidente argentino Raúl Alfonsín creó la Comisión Nacional sobre la Desaparición de Personas. Pidió que el muy respetado Sábato dirigir esta investigación sobre la tortura de los militares argentinos y el asesinato de sus ciudadanos durante la producción nacional “guerra sucia”. Hacia el final de sus días, Sábato se convirtió en un pintor, sigue buscando el sentido de la vida.
