The Adams Onis Treaty: Florida becomes part of the USA

The Adams Onis Treaty was signed in Washington, DC, on February 22, 1819 by John Quincy Adams, US Secretary of State, and Luis de Onis, the Spanish minister.  This treaty between the US and Spain gave Florida to the US and set out a boundary between the US and New Spain (now Mexico).  This territory transfer ended the centuries-long historic presence of Spain in Florida, which began with the exploration of Florida in 1513.  (Graphic by Citynoise)
