Justice for Nicaragua? 1984
On May 10, 1984, the International Court of Justice in the city of The Hague in the Netherlands ruled that the US should cease its blockade of Nicaraguan ports and stop laying mines in the Nicaraguan harbor. The court held that, “The right to sovereignty and to political independence possessed by the Republic of Nicaragua, like any other S t a t e of the region or of the world, should be fully respected and should not in any way be jeopardized by any military and paramilitary activities which are prohibited by the principles of international law….” The mining of the harbors was part of the US CIA’s attempt to undermine the leftist Nicaraguan government, which had somehow managed to be democratically elected.
El 10 de mayo de 1984, la Corte Internacional de Justicia de la ciudad de La Haya en los Países Bajos dictaminó que Estados Unidos debía cesar el bloqueo de los puertos nicaragüenses y dejar de colocar minas en el puerto nicaragüense. El tribunal sostuvo que, “El derecho a la soberanía y a la independencia política que posee la República de Nicaragua, como cualquier otro Estado de la región o del mundo, debe ser plenamente respetado y no debe ser comprometido de ninguna manera por ningún ejército y actividades paramilitares que están prohibidas por los principios del derecho internacional… ”. La minería de los puertos fue parte del intento de la CIA de Estados Unidos de socavar al gobierno izquierdista de Nicaragua, que de alguna manera había logrado ser elegido democráticamente.
