The Know-Nothings: Immigration Debate 1856

On February 18, 1856, the American Party, also known as the “Know Nothing Party”, convened in Philadelphia to nominate its first presidential candidate.  The goals of the Know-Nothings were to combat “foreign” influences in American society, particularly immigrants from Ireland and Italy.  Party membership was limited to Protestant males of British-American lineage.  The Know-Nothings also attempted to pass legislation to prevent immigrants from holding office, among their other notorious activities.   (And, yes, that was really the name of the party; no fake news in this app.)
El 18 de febrero de 1856, el Partido Americano, también conocido como el “Partido no saben nada”, se reunieron en Filadelfia para nominar a su candidato presidencial en primer lugar. Los objetivos de los Know-Nothings eran para combatir influencias “extranjeras” en la sociedad estadounidense, especialmente los inmigrantes de Irlanda e Italia. Miembros del partido se limitó a los varones protestantes de British-American linaje.
