Undocumented US Troops Invade Nicaragua 1912

During the civil wars and political struggles that wracked Nicaragua during the early 20th century, the US invaded and occupied that nation on several occasions.  During the occupation of August – November 1912, a significant battle occurred between US forces and Nicaraguan rebels.  The Battle of Coyotepe was fought at a fortress on a hill overlooking the strategic railroad line between Managua and Granada on October 3, 1912. While the warship USS California shelled the fort, US troops moved in for the battle.  The Nicaraguans were defeated.  Economics and profits were key reasons for the Nicaraguan occupation.  The US wanted to ensure that it was the only nation with access to Nicaraguan territory that could be used as a transatlantic crossing or canal.  The image is of a cartoon from the political magazine Puck that shows Uncle Sam conspiring with US business interests.  Notice that the Nicaraguan political leaders or representatives were not invited to the discussion.
