“Selena Day” 1995

Former US President George W. Bush, then governor of Texas, declared April 16, 1995, as “Selena Day”, two weeks after the death of Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Selena born in on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas.  Her father recognized her talent at age 6. She won her first Grammy in 1993 for Best Mexican American Performance for her album “Selena Live”. In addition to her fabulous voice and charismatic stage presence, Selena was an activist in anti-drug and AIDS Awareness causes.  Her death was mourned throughout North America. And as the Texas Monthly magazine wrote in 2021, “Selena Still Matters”.

Selena nació en el 16 de abril de 1971 en Lake Jackson, Texas. Su padre reconoció su talento a los 6 años. Ella ganó su primer Grammy en 1993 por Mejor Interpretación mexicano-americano por su álbum “Selena Live”. Además de su fabulosa voz y la carismática presencia, Selena fue un activista en causas de sensibilización contra las drogas y el SIDA. Su muerte fue llorada en toda América del Norte. Y como escribió la revista Texas Monthly en 2021, “ Selena sigue siendo importante” .
