Crowning of Miss Universe 1985

On July 15, 1985, to cheers, tears and applause, Puerto Rican actress and TV host Deborah Fátima Carthy-Deu was crowned as the 34th Miss Universe.  Carthy-Deu was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, and is the second Puerto Rican woman to achieve this title.  She graduated with high honors from the University of Puerto Rico with a degree in Theater Arts and Education.  In addition to her career in theater and television, the entrepreneurial Carthy-Deu owns a modeling and talent school.
El 15 de julio de 1985, entre vítores, lágrimas y aplausos, la actriz y presentadora de televisión puertorriqueña Deborah Fátima Carthy-Deu fue coronada como la 34 ° Miss Universo. Carthy-Deu nació en Santurce, Puerto Rico, y es la segunda mujer puertorriqueña en lograr este título. Se graduó con altos honores de la Universidad de Puerto Rico con un título en Artes Teatrales y Educación. Además de su carrera en teatro y televisión, la emprendedora Carthy-Deu es dueña de una escuela de modelos y talentos.

Latinx stars at First Night of the Live-Aid Concert 1985

To cheers and applause across the globe, the Live-Aid Concert began on July 13, 1985.  The dual-venue concert was held in London, England and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to raise money for the human beings impacted by a terrible famine in Ethiopia.  The event was one of the largest-scale satellite link-ups and television broadcasts to date: an estimated 1.9 billion human beings in 150 nations watched the live broadcast.  (Imagine all that organization and sharing in the pre-Facebook era!) Among the contributing performers were Latino Rock icons Joan Baez and Carlos Santana.
Entre vítores y aplausos en todo el mundo, el concierto Live-Aid comenzó el 13 de julio de 1985. El concierto en dos sedes se llevó a cabo en Londres, Inglaterra y en Filadelfia, Pensilvania, para recaudar fondos para los seres humanos afectados por una terrible hambruna en Etiopía. El evento fue uno de los enlaces satelitales y transmisiones de televisión a mayor escala hasta la fecha: se estima que 1.900 millones de seres humanos en 150 naciones vieron la transmisión en vivo. (¡Imagínese toda esa organización y participación en la era anterior a Facebook!) Entre los artistas que contribuyeron se encontraban los íconos del rock latino Joan Baez y Carlos Santana.
