Ramón López Velarde, Poet

June 15, 1888 is the birthday of nationally cherished Mexican poet, Ramón López Velarde.  Velarde was born in Zacatecas, Mexico, a beautiful city in the central Mexican high desert.  He attended a Catholic seminary, and then changed his career to law.  Velarde became a judge, and later supported the Mexican Revolution.   He began writing poetry in the early 1900’s and published his first book in 1916.  After his death, a bilingual collection of his work was released in 1995, entitled “Songs of the Heart”.  His work was described as, “… passionate perfection … which consistently couples extravagant, consuming emotion with cool, formal precision ….. Although there is much pain and anguish in these poems, sounded most consistently is the joyful music of simply being alive.” (Published by University of Texas ISBN 0-292-74685-7)
15 de junio 1888 es el cumpleaños del poeta nacional acariciado mexicano, Ramón López Velarde. Velarde nació en Zacatecas, México, una hermosa ciudad en el centro de alto desierto mexicano. Asistió a un seminario católico, y luego cambió su carrera a la ley. Velarde llegó a ser juez, y más tarde apoyó la Revolución Mexicana. Comenzó a escribir poesía en el 1900 y publicó su primer libro en 1916. Después de su muerte, una colección bilingüe de su obra fue estrenada en 1995, titulado “Canciones del Corazón”. Su trabajo ha sido descrito como “… apasionado perfección … que constantemente parejas extravagante, la emoción que consume con fría precisión, formal …..
