Franklin R. Chang-Díaz, Astronaut and Immigrant

Happy birthday to Franklin R. Chang-Díaz, a Costa Rican-born engineer, physicist, and NASA astronaut.  Díaz immigrated to the US when he was eighteen, and learned English during his senior year of high school.  His goal was to become an astronaut.  He earned a BA in mechanical engineering from the University of Connecticut and a Ph D in applied plasma physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  In 1981, Chang-Díaz became a NASA astronaut.  He has flown on six space shuttle missions, including the launch of the Galileo spacecraft to Jupiter in 1989 and the final shuttle visit to the Russian Mir space station in 1998.
Feliz cumpleaños a Franklin R. Chang-Díaz, nacido en Costa Rica, ingeniero, físico y astronauta de la NASA. Díaz emigró a los EE.UU. cuando tenía dieciocho años, y aprendió Inglés durante su último año de escuela secundaria. Su objetivo era ser astronauta. Obtuvo una licenciatura en ingeniería mecánica de la Universidad de Connecticut y un Doctorado en física de plasma aplicada por el Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts. En 1981, Chang-Díaz se convirtió en astronauta de la NASA. Ha volado en seis misiones del transbordador espacial, incluyendo el lanzamiento de la nave espacial Galileo a Júpiter en 1989 y la visita traslado definitivo a la estación espacial rusa Mir en 1998.
