“Lanzate/Take Off” Education Travel Award

Southwest Airlines and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities announced the names of the students who earned the annual “Lanzate/Take Off” Education Travel Award on October 22, 2012.  More than 400 students from around the country completed online entries and essays for the competition, detailing how the travel award would help them achieve their goal to pursue higher education.  The students are awarded round-trip tickets for themselves or members of their immediate families to visit colleges and universities near any of the 78 airports that Southwest Airlines serves.  The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, and represents approximately 450 colleges and universities.  (Image from 2010 Southwestern Airlines Awards)
Southwest Airlines y la Asociación Hispana de Colegios y Universidades anunciaron los nombres de los estudiantes que obtuvieron el premio anual de viajes educativos “Lanzate / Take Off” el 22 de octubre de 2012. Más de 400 estudiantes de todo el país completaron entradas y ensayos en línea para el competencia, detallando cómo el premio de viaje los ayudaría a lograr su objetivo de seguir una educación superior. Los estudiantes reciben boletos de ida y vuelta para ellos o los miembros de sus familias inmediatas para visitar colegios y universidades cerca de cualquiera de los 78 aeropuertos a los que sirve Southwest Airlines. La Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities tiene su sede en San Antonio, Texas, y representa a aproximadamente 450 colegios y universidades. Festival Internacional Cervantino

To thunderous applause, the Festival Internacional Cervantino began its annual program of theater, music and culture in the beautiful city of Guanajuato, Mexico on October 13, 2012.   The Festival started in the mid-20th century, when short plays by Miguel de Cervantes called “entreméses” were performed in the city’s plazas.  (Cervantes is the famous Spanish writer whose most well-known book is “The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha”, published in 1605.) In 1972, the Mexican government began to provide financial support for the festival, and it has evolved to be one of the most inspiring international artistic and cultural events in Mexico and the Americas.  Please visit www.FestivalCervantino.gob.mx, or even better, please visit the Festival this year.
Con estruendosos aplausos, el Festival Internacional Cervantino inició su programación anual de teatro, música y cultura en la hermosa ciudad de Guanajuato, México. El Festival se inició a mediados del siglo XX, cuando se representaron en las plazas de la ciudad obras breves de Miguel de Cervantes denominadas “entreméses”. (Cervantes es el famoso escritor español cuyo libro más conocido es “El ingenioso caballero Don Quijote de la Mancha”, publicado en 1605.) En 1972, el gobierno mexicano comenzó a brindar apoyo financiero para el festival, y ha evolucionado para ser uno de los eventos artísticos y culturales internacionales más inspiradores de México y América. Opening of Cesar E. Chavez National Monument 2012

As 7000 people applauded, President Barack Obama dedicated the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument on October 8, 2012.  This is the first national monument to honor a contemporary Mexican American.  The Monument is located on a 187-acre site, known as Nuestra Senora Reina de la Paz (Our Lady Queen of Peace), which was a center of the United Farm Workers of America.  Beginning in 1971, La Paz was the locale where Chavez and many organizers lived and strategized.  (Photo by Carolyn Kaster / AP)
Mientras 7000 personas aplaudían, el presidente Barack Obama dedicó el Monumento Nacional César E. Chávez el 8 de octubre de 2012. Este es el primer monumento nacional en homenaje a un mexicoamericano contemporáneo. El Monumento está ubicado en un sitio de 187 acres, conocido como Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz (Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz), que fue un centro de la Unión de Trabajadores Agrícolas de América. Javier Miyares, President of UMUC 2012

The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) announced that Javier Miyares was appointed as President of UMUC on October 1, 2012. Miyares was born in Cuba, and escaped to the US as a teen-ager.  Miyares joined UMUC in 2001 as vice president for institutional effectiveness. Previously, he served the USM office as assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs.  (I’m a graduate of UMUC, which provided me with an amazing opportunity to achieve an MS in Computer Systems at night school.) El University of Maryland University College (UMUC) anunció que Javier Miyares fue nombrado presidente de la UMUC el 1 de octubre de 2012. Miyares nació en Cuba y se escapó a los Estados Unidos cuando era adolescente. Miyares se incorporó a la UMUC en 2001 como vicepresidente de eficacia institucional. Anteriormente, se desempeñó en la oficina de USM como vicecanciller adjunto de asuntos académicos.
