Celia Cruz, The Legend at Carnegie Hall 1962

Celia Cruz’s legendary voice rang through Carnegie Hall for the first time on June 18, 1962.  Cuban born Cruz was the first Latina to grace this famous stage.  The talented Cruz introduced North Americans to a repertoire of Latin music, singing afros, rumbas, guarachas, sones, tangos, boleros, mariachis, flamenco, guaguancó, and santeria chants.  Immensely popular, she described her secret to success as:  “The secret doesn’t lie in being fashionable or in prancing around half-naked…. The most important thing entertainers have to do is show their fans affection and respect.” (Quote from Gale, Cengage Learning)
