Dominican Republic declares Independence 1844

On February 27, 1844, the Dominican Republic declared its independence from Haiti.  The two countries share the same island in the Caribbean.  The Tainos people settled the island in the 7th century.  Columbus landed in 1492, and there went the neighborhood.  Santo Domingo, its capital, is the first permanent European settlement in the Americas.  The Ciudad Colonial area in Santo Domingo is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the first European university, cathedral, and castle were built there in the early 16th century.  The country suffered a tumultuous political history after independence, including invasion and occupation by the US and the brutal dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina.
