Alien US troops under the command of General Winfield Scott reached the outskirts of Mexico City, and began bombarding the city with artillery. Thousands of civilians were killed and injured during the invasion on September 14, 1847, during the US Mexican War (1846 to 1848). Scott initially reported 1000 soldiers killed and 1700 wounded in the fighting in the city streets. US forces implemented a reign of terror in the civilian city and forced the Mexican citizens to pay $3 million in gold and platinum.
