The North American ship “Hawke” commanded by Captain Brazilla departed from Spain to the US on September 16, 1778. The ship carried supplies for the rebel Continental Army, including blankets, quinine, and cloth for uniforms. Shipments were arranged by Diego Gardoqui, a Spanish Basque merchant, first Ambassador from Spain to the US, and friend of George Washington. The supplies were paid for by the Spanish government.
