Happy Birthday to politician and public servant Eligio de la Garza, born on September 22, 1927 in Mercedes, Texas. Garza’s family traces their roots in the homeland to the 1700’s. Garza served in the US Navy and Army, and earned a law degree from St. Mary’s University. He served six terms in the Texas House of Representatives, and was elected to the US Congress in 1964. “Kika” as he was known to his constituents, focused much of his legislative efforts to support US agriculture, encourage rural economic development, and improve human nutrition. He also worked to facilitate US-Mexican trade and legislative relations. In 1978 Garza received the Order of the Aztec Eagle, one of Mexico’s highest honors.
