To thunderous applause, the Festival Internacional Cervantino began its annual program of theater, music and culture in the beautiful city of Guanajuato, Mexico on October 13, 2012. The Festival started in the mid-20th century, when short plays by Miguel de Cervantes called “entreméses” were performed in the city’s plazas. (Cervantes is the famous Spanish writer whose most well-known book is “The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha”, published in 1605.) In 1972, the Mexican government began to provide financial support for the festival, and it has evolved to be one of the most inspiring international artistic and cultural events in Mexico and the Americas.
