Richard Alfred Tapia is a highly respected American mathematician who has championed minority students in the sciences. On September 28, 2011, US President Barack Obama awarded Tapia and 11 other scientists the National Medal of Science. Tapia created four day workshops on computational science for teachers from schools with high minority enrollments. He has also mentored minority PhD students in science.
