The Secure Fence Act of 2006

On October 26, 2006 US President George W. Bush signed The Secure Fence Act of 2006 into law. Bush stated “This bill will help protect the American people. This bill will make our borders more secure. It is an important step toward immigration reform.”  The focus of the bill was to authorize construction of 700 miles of physical barriers along the Mexico-United States border and to pay for more vehicle barriers, checkpoints, lighting and advanced technology such as cameras, satellites, and unmanned aerial vehicles.  Unsurprisingly, the points of view on the bill varied widely.  Proponents of the bill think that it will protect Americans from terrorists and drug traffickers.  Opponents pointed out that the fence could be easily scaled or tunneled in many parts, and that Americans really don’t need protection from hard working men and women desperate to work for $7.25 an hour mowing lawns and cleaning toilets to support their impoverished families.
