In the autumn breeze on the beautiful coast of California, Spanish friar Junipero Serra founded the mission of San Luis Obispo de Tolosa on September 1, 1772. California was then part of the Spanish empire, which had stolen it from the First Nations, only to have it later stolen by the US. This mission was the fifth in the chain that Serra founded, and he named it after a French Archbishop. The mission is still open in the heart of San Luis Obispo today, and is a Catholic parish with elementary and high schools.
