Luis Omar Salinas, Chicano Poet

June 24, 1937 is the birthday of iconic Chicano poet, Luis Omar Salinas, born in Robstown, Texas.  Orphaned at age four, he was raised by his aunt and uncle.  Salinas lived with his family in Mexico and Texas, and they eventually settled in central California.  Salinas attended, and taught at, Fresno State University.  He published his first collection of poems, “Crazy Gypsy” in 1970. He won numerous awards for his work during his long career.   A line from his poem, “Let’s Begin the Day”, reads, “Let me cover your face with kisses, for it is necessary to begin the day, with enthusiasm and the bravado, of the bullfighter.”  (Photo credit  Karen Harlow McClintock)
24 de junio 1937 es el cumpleaños del emblemático poeta chicano, Luis Omar Salinas, nació en Robstown, Texas. Huérfano a los cuatro años, fue criado por su tía y su tío. Salinas vivía con su familia en México y Texas, y finalmente se estableció en el centro de California. Salinas asistieron, y enseñó en la Universidad Estatal de Fresno. Publicó su primera colección de poemas, “Gypsy Crazy” en 1970. Ganó numerosos premios por su trabajo durante su larga carrera. Un verso de su poema: “Vamos a empezar el día”, dice, “Que me cubra su rostro con besos, ya que es necesario para comenzar el día con entusiasmo y valentía la de los toreros”.
