Happy Birthday to Rodrigo Reyes, GALA Founder

Rodrigo Reyes was a journalist and social activist during the enlightening and tumultuous 60s and 70s in San Francisco, California.  His parents were migrant farm workers from Mexico and he was born September 24, 1945 in Weslaco, Texas.  Reyes was one of the founders of the Gay Latino Alliance (GALA), which became an important organization in addressing racism in the gay movement and homophobia in the Latino community.  In 1981, he authored the article “Latino Gays: Coming Out and Coming Home” which was published in the national Latino Nuestro magazine, inspiring a nationwide discussion on the issue of acceptance in the Latinx community.
Rodrigo Reyes fue periodista y activista social durante los esclarecedores y tumultuosos años 60 y 70 en San Francisco, California. Sus padres eran trabajadores agrícolas migrantes de México y nació el 24 de septiembre de 1945 en Weslaco, Texas. Reyes fue uno de los fundadores de Gay Latino Alliance (GALA), que se convirtió en una organización importante para abordar el racismo en el movimiento gay y la homofobia en la comunidad latina. En 1981, fue autor del artículo “Gays latinos: salir del armario y volver a casa”, que se publicó en la revista nacional Latino Nuestro, lo que inspiró una discusión a nivel nacional sobre el tema de la aceptación en la comunidad latinx.
