Burning of San Juan del Norte, Nicaragua 1854

The earth-shattering barrage continued from July 9 to July 15, 1854, as the undocumented US Navy bombarded and burned the town San Juan del Norte, Nicaragua. The stated reason was to avenge an “insult” of the norteamericano Minister to Nicaragua.  The number of civilian casualties was not listed in my research sources.  The terror of the carnage was publicized worldwide. That must have been one hell of an insult.  (Image from Illustrated London News, 1854)
El bombardeo devastador continuó desde el 9 de julio hasta el 15 de julio de 1854, cuando la Marina de los Estados Unidos bombardeó y quemó la ciudad de San Juan del Norte, Nicaragua. La razón declarada fue para vengar un insulto al ministro de los Estados Unidos a Nicaragua. El número de víctimas civiles no se incluyó en nuestras fuentes. Florida as US State 1845

After centuries of Spanish rule, Florida was admitted as the 27th US state on March 3, 1845.  Florida was first sighted by the Spanish in 1513, who named the land “La Florida”, the flowery land.  The Spanish established Saint Augustine in 1565, which is the oldest European settlement in North America, predating the Jamestown 1607 settlement.  According to the 2010 US Census, Hispanics comprise 22.5% of the population.  The Florida State Flag is based on the Viceroyalty of New Spain flag that waved from the 16th to 19th centuries.
El 3 de marzo de 1845, Florida fue admitida como el vigésimo séptimo estado de EE. UU. Florida fue avistada por primera vez por los españoles en 1513, quienes llamaron a la tierra “La Florida”, la tierra florida. Los españoles establecieron San Agustín en 1565. San Agustín es el asentamiento europeo más antiguo de América del Norte, anterior al asentamiento de Jamestown 1607. Según el censo estadounidense de 2010, los hispanos comprenden el 22,5% de la población del estado. La Bandera del Estado de Florida se basa en la bandera del Virreinato de Nueva España que ondeó desde los siglos XVI al XIX.
