Spanish Military Aid to North American Rebels 1775

On February 9, 1775, the British Parliament declared the state of Massachusetts formally in rebellion.  Jeremiah Lee, a rebel on the Massachusetts Committee of Safety wrote to the Spanish merchant, Diego Maria de Gardoqui, asking him to help with procuring military supplies.  That same month, Gardoqui managed to smuggle gunpowder and weapons into Massachusetts.  In a letter  expressing his determination to help the rebels, Gardoqui wrote: “Altho’ of a very difficulty nature, we were determined at all events to assist you accordingly, we found out means to procure as many Muskets and pistols as were ready made on the parts for the King’s army….” Gardoqui was later financed by the Spanish government, and continued to ships tons of desperately needed military arms and supplies to the North American rebels. Jeremiah Lee, un rebelde en el Comité de Seguridad Massachusetts escribió al comerciante español, Diego María de Gardoqui, pidiéndole ayuda para la adquisición de suministros militares.
