Launching of ‘Historias’ by National Public Radio 2009

The renowned keeper of our spoken stories, StoryCorps, launched “Historias” on September 24, 2009.  Historias is a new program to preserve the experiences of Latinos in the US and Puerto Rico.  The program, which already exists in English, records informal conversations between family members or close friends who share their life experiences and stories with each other. Sonya Sotomayor Oath of Office 2009

On August 8, 2009, the first Latina Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Sonya Sotomayor, was sworn in to office. Chief Justice John G. Roberts administered the Constitutional Oath.  Sotomayor’s mother attended and held the family Bible for the ceremony.  (Image by UPI/ Steve Petteway)

Racism in Texas 2009

CNN reported that a family in Azle, Texas, posted a sign outside their home that many residents preferred that they hadn’t, reading “Hispanics Keep Out”.  While there were no documented reports of documented or undocumented Latinx attempting to enter their home, the family felt compelled to display the racist message as a preemptive strike.  Many of their neighboring Texans were distressed by the sign, and called for tolerance. CNN informó que una familia en Azle, Texas, colocó un letrero afuera de su casa que muchos residentes preferían que no lo hicieran, que decía “Hispanics Keep Out”. Si bien no hubo informes documentados de hispanos documentados o indocumentados que intentaran ingresar a su hogar, la familia se sintió obligada a mostrar el mensaje racista como un ataque preventivo. Muchos de sus vecinos tejanos estaban angustiados por el letrero y pidieron tolerancia. (CNN:  WFAA reports.)

The Murder of Brisenia 2009

In the cool hours of the dark desert night on May 30, 2009, three Arizonans in the self-proclaimed Minutemen American Defense broke into the home of the Flores family.  In cold blood, they shot and killed 29-year-old Raul “Junior” Flores and his 9-year-old daughter Brisenia. They tried to murder the child’s mother and Raul’s wife, but she managed to dial 911.  The Minutemen, one of whom was a woman, were captured and convicted of first degree murder. A press release from the community organization, Presente, noted, “Though we received a verdict that condemned these atrocious murders, we also recognize that the Brisenia Flores’ case is not the isolated incident that some media reports make it out to be. Rather, it has galvanized the attention of the entire Latino community across the country as it reflects the anti-immigrant, anti-Latino hatred organized by extremist groups.”  Brisenia, we will not forget you.
En las frías horas de la noche del desierto del 30 de mayo de 2009, tres arizonenses del autoproclamado Minutemen American Defense irrumpieron en la casa de la familia Flores. A sangre fría, dispararon y mataron a Raúl “Junior” Flores, de 29 años, ya su hija Brisenia, de 9 años. Intentaron matar a la madre del niño y a la esposa de Raúl, pero ella logró marcar el 911. Los Minutemen, uno de los cuales era una mujer, fueron capturados y condenados por asesinato en primer grado. Un comunicado de prensa de la organización comunitaria Presente señaló: “Aunque recibimos un veredicto que condenaba estos atroces asesinatos, también reconocemos que el caso de Brisenia Flores no es el incidente aislado que algunos informes de los medios de comunicación dan a entender. Más bien, ha despertado la atención de toda la comunidad latina en todo el país, ya que refleja el odio antiinmigrante y anti-latino organizado por grupos extremistas ”.  Brisenia, nosotras te recordaremos.

Nomination of Sonia Sotomayor 2009

On May 26, 2009, Sonia Sotomayor was nominated by President Barack Obama as a Supreme Court Justice.  Sotomayor was the first Latina woman to receive this nomination and appointment.  Sotomayor was raised in a housing project in the Bronx, New York, with a mother determined to educate her children. Sotomayor recalled that, “…we were the only kids I knew in the housing projects to have an Encyclopedia Britannica.”  Sotomayor earned a BA at Princeton University and her law degree from Yale Law School. She was the first Latina and the third woman on the Supreme Court.
El 26 de mayo de 2009, Sonia Sotomayor fue nominada por el presidente Barack Obama como juez de la Corte Suprema. Sotomayor fue la primera mujer latina en recibir esta nominación y nombramiento. Sotomayor se crió en un proyecto de vivienda en el Bronx, Nueva York, con una madre decidida a educar a sus hijos. Sotomayor recordó que, “… éramos los únicos niños que conocía en los proyectos de viviendas que tenían una Enciclopedia Británica”. Sotomayor obtuvo una licenciatura en la Universidad de Princeton y su título de abogada en la Facultad de Derecho de Yale. Fue la primera latina y la tercera mujer en La Suprema Corte.
