Peace in Guatemala, 1996

After thirty-six long years of brutal and bloody civil war, the nation of Guatemala was finally able to declare peace on December 29, 1996. The civil war was part of a larger global power struggle for resources and for political influence, and the US-based United Fruit Company and the CIA supported different factions throughout the decades of conflict. Over 200,000 people in this small nation died during the conflict, and tens of thousands disappeared into the cold anonymity of mass graves.  The peace accord was negotiated with the support of the United Nations and foreign governments such as Spain, Norway, and Costa Rica. ‘Macarena’ hits Top 100 of The Billboard 200

The day of the Mac attack!  On September 7, 1996, Los Del Rio’s hit song ”Macarena” climbed into the top 100 of The Billboard 200. Antonio Romero and Raphael Ruiz, the two Spaniards in the Del Rio group, were pleasantly surprised by their song’s success.  It quickly became a cultural fixture, played at weddings, family reunions and bar mitzvahs – former Vice President Al Gore even danced to it at the Democratic Convention.  “‘Macarena’ is a revelation of happiness, and that happiness is captured in the rhythm of the song,” said Romero. “It puts the world in agreement to dance and celebrate.”
El 7 de septiembre de 1996, la exitosa canción de Los Del Rio “Macarena” irrumpió en el top 100 de The Billboard 200. Antonio Romero y Raphael Ruiz, los dos españoles del grupo Del Rio, quedaron gratamente sorprendidos por el éxito de su canción. Rápidamente se convirtió en un elemento cultural, tocado en bodas, reuniones familiares y bar mitzvahs; el exvicepresidente Al Gore incluso bailó en la Convención Demócrata. “‘Macarena’ es una revelación de felicidad, y esa felicidad se captura en el ritmo de la canción”, dijo Romero. “Pone al mundo de acuerdo para bailar y celebrar”.
