Scott Gomez, First Latinx in the National Hockey League

Happy Birthday to Scott Gomez, the first Latinx player in the National Hockey League.  Gomez’s paternal grandparents were from Mexico; Gomez was born in Anchorage, Alaska, to a hockey loving papi who encouraged his son’s athleticism.  Gomez earned recognition as rookie of the year at age 20, and has since played professionally for the New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, the Montreal Canadians, and the San Jose Sharks. Gomez said of his heritage, “I’m Mexican-Colombian, and I take pride in it. I take as much pride being from Alaska. But if an Hispanic kid sees what I’m doing and it makes him feel good, then that’s what it’s all about.”  (Image from www.NHL.com)
Feliz cumpleaños a Scott Gomez, el primer jugador latino en la Liga Nacional de Hockey. Los abuelos paternos de Gómez eran de México; Gómez nació en Anchorage, Alaska, de un papi amante del hockey que alentó el atletismo de su hijo. Edward Hidalgo, First Latinx US Secretary of the Navy

On October 24, 1979, Edward Hidalgo was sworn in as the first Latinx US Secretary of the Navy.  Hidalgo was born in Mexico City, Mexico, and immigrated as a young child with his family, an early “DREAMer”.  Hidalgo earned a BA at Holy Cross University and law degrees from Columbia and the University of Mexico.  He had a distinguished career in law and public service prior to his appointment, including with the US Information Agency.  Among his numerous awards, he was knighted by the Swedish government and received the Order of the Aztec Eagle from Mexico.
El 24 de octubre de 1979, Edward Hidalgo prestó juramento como el primer secretario de la Marina Latinx de los Estados Unidos. Hidalgo nació en la Ciudad de México, México, y emigró de niño con su familia. Hidalgo obtuvo una licenciatura en la Universidad de Holy Cross y una licenciatura en derecho de Columbia y la Universidad de México. Tenía una carrera distinguida en derecho y servicio público antes de su nombramiento, incluso en la Agencia de Información de EE. UU. Entre sus numerosos premios, fue nombrado caballero por el gobierno sueco y recibió la Orden del Águila Azteca de México.
