Little School of 400
The Little Schools of 400 were dedicated in a formal ceremony on June 23, 1958, initiated by Felix Tijerina and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). The goal of the schools was to teach local Spanish-speaking children a list of approximately 400 basic English words, to give the students a head start at learning. Initially, Felix Tijerina, a successful restaurateur and President of LULAC Houston, paid their salaries with his own money. The program educated over 1000 children. Later in the mid-1960s, the State of Texas was inspired to create the Preschool Instructional Program that continued the work of the Little Schools. Las Escuelitas de 400 fueron dedicadas en una ceremonia formal el 23 de junio de 1958, iniciada por Félix Tijerina y la Liga de Ciudadanos Latinoamericanos Unidos (LULAC). El objetivo de las escuelas era enseñar a los niños hispanohablantes locales una lista de aproximadamente 400 palabras básicas en inglés, para darles a los estudiantes una ventaja en el aprendizaje. Inicialmente, Félix Tijerina, un exitoso restaurador y presidente de LULAC Houston, pagaba sus salarios con su propio dinero. El programa educó a más de 1000 niños.
