Puerto Rican playwright Miguel Pinero was born in Gurabo, Puerto Rico on December 19, 1946. As a youngster, he immigrated with his family to the US. He attended school in New York City, and earned his high school equivalency. After a stint in prison, he published his gritty, realistic work, “Short Eyes”, about the killing of a sex offender.  The head of the New York Shakespeare Festival Public Theater hailed Pinero as “the first Puerto Rican playwright to really break through and be accepted as a major writer for the stage.” Pinero received numerous awards for his work, including New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Antoinette Perry Award Nomination for best play, Obie Award, and Drama Desk Award. The play was adapted as a film in 1977.
El dramaturgo puertorriqueño Miguel Pinero nació en Gurabo, Puerto Rico el 19 de diciembre de 1946. De joven, emigró con su familia a los Estados Unidos. Asistió a la escuela en la ciudad de Nueva York y obtuvo su equivalencia de escuela secundaria. Después de una temporada en prisión, publicó su trabajo realista y valiente, “Short Eyes”, sobre el asesinato de un delincuente sexual. El director del Teatro Público del Festival Shakespeare de Nueva York elogió a Pinero como “el primer dramaturgo puertorriqueño que realmente se abrió paso y fue aceptado como un escritor importante para el teatro”. Pinero recibió numerosos premios por su trabajo, incluido el premio New York Drama Critics Circle, la nominación al premio Antoinette Perry a la mejor obra, el premio Obie y el premio Drama Desk. La obra fue adaptada como película en 1977.

Happy Birthday to the wonderfully talented Linda Ronstadt, whose stellar singing voice has ranged from rock to country to mariachi to operetta.  Ronstadt was born on July 15, 1946, in Tucson, Arizona, where her father, a hardware store manager, loved to play and sing Mexican music.  Ronstadt was raised during a decidedly anti-Hispanic heritage era in Arizona, an attitude which has resurfaced under the state’s current political leadership.  As she noted in an interview with Parade Magazine, “When we were little, we spoke Spanish at home, but the schools pounded it out of us pretty early.  There was an antibilingual attitude then.”  She started with the briefly successful group “The Stone Poneys” then soloed in the 1970’s with hits that baby-boomers will remember:  “When Will I Be Loved?”, “Desperado”, “You’re No Good”, and “Blue Bayou”.  At this phase in her life, Rondstadt has returned to her Latino roots, and recorded an album of her father’s favorite mariachi songs.

Feliz cumpleaños a la maravillosa y talentosa Linda Ronstadt, cuya voz de canto estelar ha variado desde el rock hasta el country, pasando por el mariachi y la opereta. Ronstadt nació el 15 de julio de 1946 en Tucson, Arizona, donde a su padre, gerente de una ferretería, le encantaba tocar y cantar música mexicana. Ronstadt se crió durante una era decididamente antihispánica en Arizona, una actitud que ha resurgido bajo el actual liderazgo político del estado. Como señaló en una entrevista con la revista Parade, “Cuando éramos pequeños, hablábamos español en casa, pero las escuelas nos lo sacaban a golpes desde muy temprano. Entonces había una actitud antibilingüística”. Comenzó con el brevemente exitoso grupo “The Stone Poneys” y luego hizo un solo en la década de 1970 con éxitos que los baby boomers recordarán: “When Will I Be Loved?”, “Desperado”, “You’re No Good” y “Blue Bayou “. Happy Birthday to Cheech Marin, a third-generation, native English speaker born in LA, California on July 13, 1946.   The talented actor in his fabulous counterculture comedic roles has entertained norteamericanos for decades.   A straight “A” student who worked his way through college as a dishwasher and janitor, Cheech graduated from California State University.  He met his comedic partner, Chong, in Canada, while on hiatus from the Vietnam War.  His comedic social satire, “Born in East LA”, was a successful Hollywood film.  He entered the big budget film world of Hollywood with his role in “The Tin Cup” and he has played a voice over character in “The Lion King”.   (Image from www.CheechandChong.com)

Danny Gardella,,the Mexican Baseball League

On February 19, 1946, Giants outfielder Danny Gardella (1920- 2005) was the first major league player to announce that he was joining the Mexican League, a professional baseball league based in Mexico.  The Mexican League offered substantially better wages of $10,000 / year versus the $4,500 / year that Gardella was offered from the New York Giants.  Gardella, an Italian-American from New York, was blacklisted for playing for this League, and sued MLB Commissioner Happy Chandler.
