El Greco, Master Painter 1614

April 7, 1614 marks the death of one of Spain’s most famous and beloved painters, who was actually Greek:  El Greco.  Born Domenikos Theotokopoulos in Crete in 1541, El Greco immigrated to Spain in 1577.  He settled in Toledo where he was commissioned for a number of major religious paintings and portraits.  His timeless and stunningly modern paintings inspired artists worldwide.  One of his masterpieces, “The Opening of the Fifth Seal”, is displayed in the New York Metropolitan Museum.
07 de abril 1614 se conmemora el fallecimiento de uno de los pintores más famosos y queridos de España, que en realidad era griego: El Greco. Nacido Doménikos Theotokópoulos en Creta en 1541, El Greco llegó a España en 1577. Se instaló en Toledo, donde fue comisionado para una serie de grandes pinturas religiosas y retratos. Sus pinturas inspirado a artistas en todo el mundo. Una de sus obras maestras, “La apertura del quinto sello”, aparece en el New York Metropolitan Museum.
