Poor People’s March on Washington, DC 1968

The Poor People’s March on Washington, DC on May 12, 1968.  The march was planned and organized by Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.  (King was assassinated on April 4, 1968.) Latino activist Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzalez (1928 –2005) joined the march, and issued his manifesto, “Demandas de la Raza” (Demands of the Race).  The Demandas focused on better education and housing for Latinos, as well as civil rights and land reform.  Gonzalez fue a social activist, boxer, and poet.
El 12 de mayo de 1968 fue el comienzo de la Marcha de los Pobres en Washington, DC. La marcha fue planeada y organizada por Martin Luther King, Jr. y la Conferencia de Liderazgo Cristiano del Sur. (King fue asesinado el 4 de abril de 1968). El activista latino Rodolfo “Corky” González (1928 –2005) se unió a la marcha y emitió su manifiesto, “Demandas de la Raza”. Las Demandas se enfocaron en una mejor educación y vivienda para los latinos, así como en los derechos civiles y la reforma agraria. González fue activista social, boxeador y poeta.
