Little School of 400
The Little Schools of 400 were dedicated in a formal ceremony on June 23, 1958, initiated by Felix Tijerina and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). The goal of the schools was to teach local Spanish-speaking children a list of approximately 400 basic English words, to give the students a head start at learning. Initially, Felix Tijerina, a successful restaurateur and President of LULAC Houston, paid their salaries with his own money. The program educated over 1000 children. Later in the mid-1960s, the State of Texas was inspired to create the Preschool Instructional Program that continued the work of the Little Schools.
