The Murder of the Butterflies 1960

The time of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic was years of tears, blood, torture and murder. Over 50,000 people were killed during his 30 year reign of terror. Among the few courageous souls who opposed the brutal regime were the Mirabel sisters. The sisters were from a comfortable, upper class family, and had much to lose and little to gain for their political activism.  On November 25, 1960, three of the sisters paid the ultimate price, and were savagely beaten to death on a lonely country road.  To commemorate their heroism, and that of other revolutionary women, the United Nations designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Their heroic story was also honored in the book and film, “In the Time of Butterflies”.
La época de la dictadura de Trujillo en República Dominicana fue años de lágrimas, sangre, torturas y asesinatos. Más de 50.000 personas murieron durante su reinado de terror de 30 años. Entre las pocas almas valientes que se opusieron al brutal régimen se encontraban las hermanas Mirabel. Las hermanas eran de una familia cómoda de clase alta, y tenían mucho que perder y poco que ganar por su activismo político. El 25 de noviembre de 1960, tres de las hermanas pagaron el precio máximo y fueron brutalmente golpeadas hasta la muerte en un solitario camino rural. Para conmemorar su heroísmo y el de otras mujeres revolucionarias, Naciones Unidas designó el 25 de noviembre como el Día Internacional para la Eliminación de la Violencia contra la Mujer. Su heroica historia también fue honrada en el libro y la película “ En la época de las mariposas ”.

Happy Birthday to Elizabeth Avellán Veloz, an American film producer born in Caracas, Venezuela on November 8, 1960.  Her family moved to Houston when she was a child, and Avellán attended Rice University.  A leader of the film production scene in Texas Hollywood (the city of Austin), Avellán was a co-founder of Troublemaker Studios.  With Troublemaker, Avellán produced a string of blockbuster films that included “Sin City”, the “Spy Kids” trilogy and “Desperado”.  Avellán likens her production work to her other starring role as the mother of six children, “I’m the one who tells people, ‘Yes, you can do that,’ or ‘No, we don’t have money for that. It’s a lot like being a mother.”

Happy Birthday to politico, lawyer, and human rights activist Janet Murguia.  All American Murguia was born in Kansas City, Kansas, and currently served as president and chief executive officer of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR).  Applauded by most and demonized by some, NCLR is the largest nonprofit, nonpartisan Latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the US. Her Mexican American parents’ education was limited to elementary school; Murguia achieved two BAs and a law degree.  Murguia served in the White House during the Clinton Administration and as chancellor at her Alma Mater, the University of Kansas.  In an interview in 2006, Murguia stated, “I’ve seen the American dream be a reality, and I want to make sure we can make it a reality for others as well.” (Image by Michael Buckner/ Getty Images for NCLR)

Happy Birthday to the talented Antonio Banderas, actor, singer, producer, and director, born on August 10, 1960 in Malaga, Spain.  He began acting in street theaters at age 14.  As he recounted in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “I remember I couldn’t even (afford to) take a bus, so I had to walk six miles to get an audition.”  For his first Hollywood role in “The Mambo Kings”, Banderas stipulated in his contract that he would enroll in a Berlitz class – he did not speak English, and learned his lines phonetically. The now multi-millionaire actor and director (who no longer worries about taking the bus) starred in blockbuster films such as “Spy Kids”, “Shrek”, “The Mask of Zorro”, and “Puss in Boots”.  His most recent work is “Pain and Glory” with Pedro Almodovar, which is heralded as a career masterpiece.  (Image from DreamWorks).

Juan Marichals Debuts in Major League Baseball

On July 19, 1960, Juan Marichal debuted in the Major Leagues by pitching a one hitter with 12 strikeouts against the Philadelphia Phillies.  The Dominican-born Marichal played with the New York Giants, San Francisco Giants, and Boston Red Sox.  He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983.
El 19 de julio de 1960, Juan Marichal debutó en las Grandes Ligas lanzando un hit con 12 ponches contra los Filis de Filadelfia. El dominicano Marichal jugó con los New York Giants, San Francisco Giants y Boston Red Sox. Fue incluido en el Salón de la Fama del Béisbol en 1983.

Happy Birthday Anna Maria Arias (1960 – 2001)

July 12, 1960 was the birthday of Anna Maria Arias, a trailblazing Latina entrepreneur and media mogul, born in San Bernardino, California.  Arias was the founder of Latina Style magazine, the first North American magazine for professional Hispanic women.  Arias’ mission was to provide a positive image of Hispanic Americans, focusing on their accomplishments and contributions.  As she stated in the magazine’s first issue, “The contemporary Hispanic woman has been virtually ignored by general market media, and even the Hispanic media tends to under represent the positive contributions made by Hispanic women. To redress this state, and address the needs of this growing market segment, LATINA Style magazine was born.”  One of the only battles that Arias lost was her final one with aplastic anemia in 2001.
El 12 de julio de 1960 fue el cumpleaños de Anna Maria Arias, una emprendedora latina pionera y magnate de los medios, nacida en San Bernardino, California. Arias fue la fundadora de la revista Latina Style, la primera revista norteamericana para mujeres hispanas profesionales. La misión de Arias era brindar una imagen positiva de los hispanoamericanos, enfocándose en sus logros y contribuciones. Como afirmó en el primer número de la revista, “La mujer hispana contemporánea ha sido virtualmente ignorada por los medios del mercado general, e incluso los medios hispanos tienden a subrepresentar las contribuciones positivas hechas por las mujeres hispanas. Para reparar este estado y abordar las necesidades de este segmento de mercado creciente, nació la revista LATINA Style. ” Una de las únicas batallas que perdió Arias fue la última con anemia aplásica en 2001.

Loretta Sanchez, US Congresswoman

Happy Birthday to Loretta Sanchez, US Congresswoman, entrepreneur, and small business owner.  Sanchez was born on January 7, 1960.  Sanchez represented the 46th district in California.  She is the daughter of Mexican immigrants; her father was a machinist and her mother was a secretary.  Sanchez earned her BA with a scholarship to Chapman University and her MBA at American University.  After working in the public sector, she was elected to Congress in a close match in 1996.  While viewed as a moderate Democrat, she was one of the few members of Congress to vote against the ill-fated invasion of Iraq in 2002, once again demonstrating the wisdom of Latina women.  Her sister, Linda, was also elected to the US Congress, and the two women made history as the first sisters to serve simultaneously in the US Congress.
