Happy Birthday to professor, poet and writer Lorraine López, born on September 6, 1956 in Los Angeles, California.  López earned her BA at California State University and her MA and Ph D at the University of Georgia. Known for her insightful cross cultural literature, her works include ‘Soy la Avon Lady and Other Stories‘ and ‘The Gifted Gabaldón Sisters’.  Lopez noted in an interview that, “The role of literature is the same as the role of art which is to expand upon a person’s store of knowledge and experience in such a way that the person perceives the world differently, more comprehensively. Obviously, the role of Chicano literature is the same for me.”

Happy Birthday to Monica Cecilia Lozano, born in Los Angeles on July 21, 1956.  Lozano earned a ranking among the 100 most influential Hispanic women by Hispanic Business Magazine in 1987 and 1992.  The newspaper editor and social activist has received numerous awards for her contributions and public service for human rights.  She has been publisher and CEO of La Opinion since 2004, when La Opinion merged with the New York City daily El Diario La Prensa to create ImpreMedia, the largest Spanish-language news organization in the US.  In 2008, Lozano was appointed on the US Presidential Board of Economic Advisors.

Archbishop Patrick F. Flores ordination in 1956

Archbishop Patrick F. Flores was first ordained as a priest on May 26, 1956. Flores’ parents were Mexican immigrants and migrant farm workers living in Ganado, Texas.  He was the first Mexican-American Catholic Archbishop in the US.  Flores helped to establish the National Foundation of Mexican American Vocations and the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund.  He received numerous awards for his public service.
El arzobispo Patrick F. Flores fue ordenado sacerdote por primera vez el 26 de mayo de 1956. Los padres de Flores eran inmigrantes mexicanos y trabajadores agrícolas migrantes que vivían en Ganado, Texas. Fue el primer arzobispo mexicano-estadounidense en los Estados Unidos. Flores ayudó a establecer la Fundación Nacional de Vocaciones México Americanas y el Fondo Nacional de Becas Hispanas. Ha recibido numerosos premios por su servicio público.

Happy Birthday to Andy Garcia, Award-Winning Actor

On April 12, 1956, Andy Garcia was born in Havana, Cuba, and immigrated to the US with his family at age 5.  The acclaimed actor grew up in Miami, learning English as a second language.  He studied acting at Florida International University and performed in regional theater productions until he moved to Hollywood in 1978.  There he worked as – guess what? – a waiter while auditioning.  In one of his most famous roles, Garcia played an Italian-American in “The Godfather” movie series. Garcia has won numerous awards for his talent and his cultural contributions, including the Star of the Year Prize from the National Association of Theater Owners, the Harvard University Foundation Award, and a Grammy nomination for an album.  The moral of the story: Be polite to Latino waiters – you never know when you’ll be asking them for their autograph or a selfie.

El 12 de abril de 1956, Andy García nació en La Habana, Cuba. El aclamado actor se crió en Miami, el aprendizaje de Inglés como segunda lengua. Estudió actuación en la Universidad Internacional de Florida y actuó en producciones teatrales regionales hasta que se mudó a Hollywood en 1978. Allí trabajó como – ¿adivinen qué? – Un camarero mientras audiciones. En uno de sus papeles más famosos, jugó un italo-americano en “El Padrino”, serie de películas. García ha ganado numerosos premios por su talento y sus contribuciones culturales, entre ellos el Premio Estrella del Año de la Asociación Nacional de Propietarios de Teatro, el Premio de la Fundación Universidad de Harvard, y una nominación al Grammy por un álbum. The amazing voice of Miguel Bosé, Spanish musician and actor, was first heard on April 2, 1956, during his birth in Aries, Panama.  His mother was an Italian actress and his father was a Spanish bullfighter.  The famous Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, was his godfather, and North American writer Ernest Hemmingway was a family friend.  In 2001, he earned a Latin Grammy Award nomination for Best Album by a Male Vocalist. Well-known for his diverse interests, Bosé wrote in an online interview, “I believe that we should be engaged with all of these things, because they affect our existence. We can’t pretend to be separate from politics, the economy, science, religion, and the environment.
